More than 375 years old, Chennai is as old as the rule of the British East India Company’s rule in India. Chennai, formerly known as Madras, was founded on the 22nd of August, in the year of 1639. On this day, the British Administrator Francis Day made a deal with the local rulers, the Nayaks. This deal was to acquire a stretch of no-man’s land, where the seat of power of the Tamil Nadu government stands today, the famous Fort St. George. This land has developed into the beautiful city of Chennai today.

In 1996, the city was rechristened from Madras to Chennai by the DMK government. The name Madras is said to have originated from Madrasipattinam, which is a fishing village that is located north of the St. George Fort.

Fort St. George was the first fortress built in India, in 1644. A testament to early British rule in the country, Fort St. George is home to St. Mary’s Church, the Fort Museum and Wellesley House. St. Mary’s Church is the oldest Anglican church in the country. The Wellesley House is named after Richard Wellesley, who served as the governor-general of India from 1798 to 1805. The Fort Museum displays interesting memorabilia, including Chennai’s origins and the fort, as well as military artifacts, and art from the colonial times.

Inside the vast perimeter walls of Fort St. George, there is a smattering of old buildings, which housed Tamil Nadu’s Legislative Assembly and Secretariat until recently. Now, certain areas are open to the public.
